Hecate was considered one of the “guardians of the threshold”, as she held the key to the passage between the world of the living and the dead. Midnight was the favored hour of Hecate, the One-Who-Stands-In-The-Middle. In Greek mythology, however, this vast domain, which encompassed all the world’s riches, was actually the realm of Pluto, lord of the territory between the moon and the depths of the earth. This “space” between the moon and the earth was called “air”, while the upper part was called aether. For the ancients, the particular “humidity” present in the air was caused not by terrestrial waters, but by the proximity of the moon. Today, science has understood that the moon exerts its attraction on the Earth as it does on the waters of the oceans.
